Even if your car is being driven by your child and is involved in an accident (not necessarily your child's fault), it's still your vehicle, so you are liable.
Property Damage Liability (PD)
provides coverage (protection) for other people's property damaged in an accident where you are at fault.
In California, the state requires that you have both BI and PD coverage in the following minimum limits:
$15,000 bodily injury per person
$30,000 maximum per accident
$5,000 property damage per accident

COLLISION DEDUCTIBLE WAIVER
Collision coverage
pays for damages, less your
deductible
, for the cost of repairs or the
actual cash value (ACV)
of your car, whichever is less, regardless of who is at fault.
Collision coverage is available only with a deductible, although there may be times when your deductible is
waived
.
For example, when damage to your car is caused by an
uninsured driver
and a
collision deductible waiver (CDW)
has been purchased, your deductible may be waived providing certain conditions are met.
As with
comprehensive coverage
, if you are financing your car, the
lienholder
may require collision coverage.
COMPREHENSIVE DEDUCTIBLE
If your car is damaged by fire, theft, vandalism, glass breakage, windstorm damage or even contact with an animal,
comprehensive coverage
will pay, less your
deductible
, for the cost of your repairs or the
actual cash value (ACV)
of your car, whichever is less.
Comprehensive coverage does not include wear and tear, engine failure, or other mechanical difficulties. When you are financing your car, comprehensive coverage may be required by the
lienholder
.
Comprehensive deductible
is the amount you have to pay out of pocket before your
insurance
kicks in.
Deductibles
come in different amounts, but generally they are $100, $250, $500 or $1,000.
Suppose you have $3,000 in damages and your deductible is $500. If you have an accident your insurance will cover $2,500 and you pay the other $500 out of your own pocket.

SR-22 OR SR-1P FILING
Are you required to file an
SR-22
or
SR-1P
?
These are documents called filings, required by the DMV to show proof that you have
liability insurance
.
Both the SR-22 or SR-1P are forms that are filed with the DMV to show proof of auto liability insurance. They are issued along with your auto liability policy. In fact, they are only valid while your
policy
is active. If you let your policy
lapse
, the SR-22 or SR1P is automatically canceled.
The SR-22 is for drunk driving, DUI convictions, driving without insurance and various other offenses, where a court has ordered that you must have official proof of insurance.
The SR-1P is usually required if you've had accidents when you were uninsured.
The Department of Motor Vehicles will not accept any other form (policy, identification card, etc.) as a substitute for the SR-22 or SR-1P.
